The Spring season is officially in full swing and SLSG Metro has already made their presence known. On the weekend of March 3rd and 4th, 11 SLSG Metro teams traveled to Kansas City to participate in the Border Battle: 13G Blue, 13G Green, 13G White, 14G Blue, 11B Blue, 12B PA, 13B PA, 14 PA, 15PA, 16 NPL and 18 NPL. Below is an update on each team's performance:

13G White- Finished second in group play going 1-1-1 on the weekend

13G Green- Finalists in the tournament after a very close and heartbreaking loss in PKs in the Championship match.

13G Blue- The St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro Blue 98/99 girls went undefeated group play of the Border Battle beating FC Barrington (IL), Spirit America Pink Panthers (KS) and Gretna Enyo (NE) scoring 7 goals and conceding 2. They lost in the final to Fury 99 Green of Oklahoma after having controlled much of the game.

14G Blue- Went 2-1 in group play, but most importantly defeated both MRL opponents to open up their MRL Spring season with 2 wins.

11B Blue- The boys went 2-1 on the weekend with two very good wins over St. Louis opponents. Their only loss coming to BVSC who would eventually win the tournament.

12B PA- The U12 PA 11v11 team got off to a rough start with a 1-2 loss to SLSG Santos on Saturday. The team recovered well to tie Colorado Arsenal Gold on Saturday night by scoring the equalizing goal with just 40 seconds left in the match. Sunday saw a convincing 3-0 win to finish the weekend at 1-1-1. According to Coach Alumbaugh, "Hopefully, the lessons learned on Saturday will propel the group to some more favorable results as the spring progresses."

13B PA- Finished as Finalists after qualifying for the championship match with a record of 2 wins and 1 draw in group play without conceding a single goal. The group lost a very close match in the final to Sporting KC after giving an early goal they rallied and had several chances to equalize in the second half, but gave up a late goal as they were pushing to find the equalizer late. According to Coach Alumbaugh, "It was a good weekend for the 13 PA as we had a better comfort level with the ball and showed that much of our hard work during the winter months was going to pay off this upcoming spring. Looking forward to seing the group continue to progress.”

14B PA- Went 3-0-1 and on the weekend and did not concede any goals. They qualified for the championship in dramatic fashion with 2 goals in the final 3 minutes of their last group match to advance over KCFC who they tied 0-0 on goal differential. In the championship match they defeated NPL opponent BVSC 3-0 to win the event.

15B PA- Went 1-1-1 on the weekend. Their only loss came to St. Croix out of Minnesota which is one of the top teams in the entire Mid-west region. The team ended their weekend with a solid 1-0 victory over local favorite, KCFC.

16 NPL- The 16s had a very challenging weekend as they elected to play up an age group in the top division of U17 in order to prepare for the opening of NPL play the final weekend. In addition to playing up, they were competing against a State Cup Champion and a State Cup Finalist. While they went 0-3 on the weekend, the strategy paid off as they won their opening NPL match 2-0 over the Minnesota Thunder the following weekend.

18 NPL- The 18 NPL team finished with a 1-1-1 record. The weekend started off with a win against the KC Blaze Phoenix. After going down 1-0 in a game that shouldn’t have been close, the group quickly regrouped and found 2 goals to finish the game 2-1. According to Coach Van Buskirk, "The 2nd game would be the toughest of the group play, matching up against NPL Rivals Sporting BVSC U18s, we knew going into this game we would have to defend for longer periods of time and find our moments to go forward on the counter and did well to get to half at 0-0." Unfortunately, an early second half goal was unanswered and the team ended up losing 0-1. The 3rd group game pitted SLSG Metro against Topeka Select United. As in game 1, the group battled back from a goal down to go into half 1-1. The 2nd half was wide open with both teams pushing numbers forward to get the next goal knowing they needed to win to get to the finals. Topeka caught the first break on a deflection and went up 2-1. Coach Van Buskirk stated, "I was proud of the guys for not hanging their heads after the goal, we keep pushing forward and getting good scoring chances, which would eventually pay off with a goal." Unfortunately, there was not enough time to find a third goal and the match ended 2-2, so ending the teams weekend.

Following the Border Battle, the SLSG Metro Boy's Program opened up their US Club NPL Midwest Developmental League season with matches against the Minnesota Thunder. The weekend was a tremendous success with SLSG Metro teams earning 3 wins, 1 draw and one loss on the weekend taking 10 of the 15 points available from the matches. NPL play continues this weekend as the 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 teams will travel to Chicago to compete in matches with the Chicago Fire and Chicago Magic.
